Troy is one of Oakland County's largest cities and one of its main business centers. Realcomp recorded 831 residential and condo sales in Troy in 2025, with a median residential sale of $480,000 and a median of 22 days on the market.
The homes
Troy grew mostly after 1960, so the typical home is a colonial, ranch or tri-level in a planned subdivision, on a larger lot than you find closer to Detroit. There are also condo communities, newer infill homes on lots where older houses stood, and some larger homes in the northern part of the city.
Getting around
I-75 runs through Troy, with Big Beaver Road as the main east-west corridor. Many of the area's large employers are along Big Beaver and in the office parks off I-75, and the Troy Transit Center sits near the Birmingham border.
Shopping and parks
The Somerset Collection on Big Beaver is the city's best-known shopping destination. Troy runs a large park system, and the Stage Nature Center and Troy Historic Village are both in the city.
Buying here: taxes and costs
Millage rates in Troy depend on the school district as well as the city. As anywhere in Michigan, a home's taxable value resets after a sale, so estimate your taxes from its state equalized value and file the Principal Residence Exemption after closing.
