Sterling Heights is in central Macomb County, between Troy and Clinton Township. Realcomp recorded 1,354 residential and condo sales in Sterling Heights in 2025, with a median residential sale of $325,500 and a median of 22 days on the market.
The homes
The area was mostly farmland until the 1950s and became a city in 1968, so most neighborhoods were built in the decades since, mainly subdivisions of single-family homes along with condo communities. Condos are a real part of the market here: 311 of the 2025 sales were condos, with a median of $226,000.
Getting around
M-53 (Van Dyke) runs north and south through the city, and M-59 (Hall Road), the main east-west link between Macomb and Oakland counties, runs along its north side. Mound Road and 16 Mile Road (Metro Parkway) are the other main routes, and Dequindre Road is the border with Troy.
Parks and the river
The Clinton River crosses the northeast part of the city. The Clinton River Park Trail follows it for about 10 miles through Sterling Heights, Utica and Shelby Township, past the city's Dodge Park on Utica Road.
Buying here: taxes and costs
Millage rates in Sterling Heights depend on the school district as well as the city. As anywhere in Michigan, a home's taxable value resets after a sale, so estimate your taxes from its state equalized value (how uncapping works) and file the Principal Residence Exemption after closing.
